Here's a rather dramatic preview for Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, but I think it shows what's happening with the school lunch program.
Don't delay the Child Nutrition Bill
The National School Lunch Program hasn't been updated for years, and schools are struggling to meet the demand for fresh, local food. The Senate has introduced a bill with new funding for healthier food, stronger nutrition standards, and grants for linking schools to local farms -- but it's been stalled by Senate leadership, and may be postponed for another year or two. Instead of much-needed help, school lunch programs could end up with the same old status quo. Please tell your Senators to make child nutrition a priority.
A Letter from Slow Food USA:
This bill will equip schools to buy and cook healthier food, strengthen nutrition standards (including for school vending machines), and provide new support for local food and school gardens. Since school lunch is a federal program, the only way to make some of these big improvements is via Congress.
A group of Senators are asking their colleagues to join them in urging the leadership to schedule time for the bill. The deadline for Senators to join the effort is tomorrow, Wednesday, May 19 -- so please write your Senators today.
Thank you,
Gordon, Jerusha and the rest of the Time for Lunch team at Slow Food USA.
