Take the Test & Money Gets Sent to Haiti!

...a message from President Bill Clinton....(and a THANK YOU to Bryan Reimer for forwarding on the information!)

When it comes to saving our planet for future generations, we all have the best intentions. But in order to chart a new course on climate, we must turn those good intentions into action -- and it begins with each of us taking initiative in our own homes and communities.

Today, you can help fight climate change with a small but meaningful step:
Take the Clinton Foundation's new climate quiz before Earth Day, April 22, and $2 will be donated toward the purchase of solar flashlights for Haitians living in camps, providing them with energy-efficient light and helping to enhance their safety and security.

Take the climate quiz -- and take initiative for the people of Haiti.

If, together, we can get 100,000 people to take this quiz, we can send 20,000 solar, energy-efficient flashlights to Haitians displaced from their homes by the devastating January earthquake.

Every one of us can make a difference in addressing global problems and improving the lives of others. This idea is at the core of the Clinton Foundation's work, on Earth Day and every day, as we work with cities around the world to increase energy-efficiency and decrease greenhouse gas emissions in ways that lift local economies.

But you can take action from your own home by testing your knowledge of climate change, and $2 will go toward the purchase of solar flashlights for Haiti.

Thank you for joining us in our fight against climate change, and in the process, helping the people of Haiti in their time of need.

Sincerely,

President Bill Clinton

Happy Earth Day!!!

Well like many of you when I got up this morning I flipped on the lights in my room, took a nice hot shower, flushed my toilet, ran my hairdryer and then turned on the TV to check the weather. And the first story I see is Jones Soda (based right downtown Seattle) has gone off the grid for the day! The lights are out and the power in the whole office is totally off…with one exception: The office staff are taking turns riding bikes to generate power for bare essentials (mainly phones and computers). You can check out their site here and watch the employees pedal their hearts out for power.

And then my daughter walked in and said “MOM! It’s Earth Day, why are all the lights on!?!?!” I immediately ran around and turned off all the lights and finished getting ready for the day in the slight darkness of my condo. Her school is going off the grid today as well and we are now off the grid at home. Everything is off and staying off (except the fridge) for the next 24 hours.

How can you contribute on this Earth Day!??! There are so many easy things to do! First, check out (and subscribe) to PlayGreen’s blog at http://www.play-green.blogspot.com/ for lots of useful tips. Or check out this article from PlanetGreen for a quick and easy list for Earth Day Resolutions. For those of you really curious….you can check on your Carbon Footprint here and then find out many ways to reduce it or you can purchase carbon offsets with them as well.

For those of you with iPhones, there is now a “Dirty Dozen” application for your phone.

Along with Earth Day, today is also payday!!!! Check out the attached email for information on going paperless for those of you with direct deposit. I must confess, up until this morning, even I hadn’t signed up yet.

Try going Vegan today! It has been stated that if every American gave up meat one day a week, it would be the equivalent of taking 8 million cars off the road!!! Up for the challenge today? Check out the following restaurants:

  • Subway: Veggie Delite on Italian bread, minus the cheese & mayo
  • Halong Bay Restaurant (Bella Bottega): Order a noodle or rice dish & substitute meat with their faux-chicken, or just order it with no meat at all (warning: they only have meat broth available for their Pho here). Ask that they not bring the Nuoc Mam (pronounced: nuk MOM) on the side (which is fish-based).
  • Thanh Brothers (Redmond): Their pho IS Vegan, using veggie broth.
  • Flying Saucer Pizza: Order the Dr. Zaius, which is their veggie Thai Pizza with sweet, but spicy peanut sauce, Pineapple, Carrots, Sprouts, Red Cabbage, Basil, Chopped nuts, and Sesame Seeds
  • Momoya Japanese Restaurant: Ask Ben to make you all-veggie sushi rolls (indicate “no cream cheese”). He makes the best veggie sushi around.
  • Teapot Vegetarian House (Redmond; 15230 NE 24th St): Check out the menu! http://www.teapotvegetarianhouse.com/menus.htm
  • Tommy Thai: Order anything without fish sauce & meat, and you should be good to go.
  • CafĂ© Happy (downtown Kirkland, near the Marina; 102 Kirkland Ave): Chinese meals & sandwiches. Vegan bubble-tea!
  • Nature’s Pantry (Bellevue, 10201 NE 10th ST, same building as University Book Store): deli has Vegan & RAW options
  • PCC (Redmond or Kirkland locations): The deli section will clearly label which items are Vegan. They encourage sampling!
  • Mysore Masala Cuisine Of India (16650 Redmond Way): The staff here is happy to tell you which options are dairy-free & vegetarian.
  • Taco Del Mar (Redmond & Kirkland): They have a Vegan burrito. I swear, you will not miss the meat in this monster.
  • Nick’s Grill (Kirkland; 11613 124th Ave NE): Have Kiki make you their veggie burrito, which they throw on the grill for an extra-special touch. Add sliced avocado while you’re at it.

Last, but certainly not least…Disney’s Earth starts today nationwide. If you purchase a ticket for this movie this week, Disney will plant a tree in your honor! See the trailer here, purchase tickets here.

And remember, Earth Day is everyday!!

Earth Day Celebrates it's 40th Year!

Earth Day is just around the corner (April 22nd) and this year is the 40th anniversary of this day of action. The Earth Day Network and Green Apple Festival have joined together to focus as much attention on volunteer efforts for Earth Day weekend (April 17th-19th) as possible!

There is set to be huge events at the National Mall in Washington, DC as well as free "thank you" concerts for volunteers in each city. The cities involved? New York City, Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Los Angeles, San Fransisco and SEATTLE!

With support from presenting sponsors Disneynature, Timberland, Motorola, Inc. and Clear2GO as well as media partners Planet Green, USAToday and others, Earth Day 2009 will encourage Americans to sign up to participate in meaningful actions to give back to communities while restoring and renewing the Earth.

There are 3 components for the events:

  • Earth Day on the National Mall: A large-scale free Earth Day Festival with music, entertainment, speakers and environmental activities will take place on the National Mall in Washington DC on Sunday, April 19, 2009. More info on Earth Day is available at http://www.earthday.net/.

  • Volunteer Actions by tens of thousands of participants in ten cities, April 17 - 19 2009, making Earth Day a time of meaningful change. These projects in parks, beaches, schools and forests, will focus on climate change solutions like tree planting, energy efficiency retrofits, water protection, urban gardens and forest restoration. Produced with the participation of leading environmental organizations across the US, along with city parks and recreation departments, the activities address current challenges and will help cities and organizations get important work done. Suitable for individuals of all ages, including children and families, these activities encourage active lifestyles, while also connecting volunteers with the green products and solutions. Participants can sign up to volunteer at http://www.greenapplefestival.com/ and http://www.planetgreen.com/.

  • Thank You Concerts for volunteers at popular music venues in all cities April 19, 2009 (artists and venues to be announced). Following volunteer activities, all participants will be invited to attend a celebratory night of music and entertainment at a popular venue in their city.

Register with Earth Day Network's Global Event Registry and you will be automatically entered to win their Earth Day 2009 raffle! Raffle to be drawn April 22nd. I'll check what is going on and get back to you all, perhaps we can put together one more volunteer event in April.

Information on the volunteer opportunities and the concert line-ups still have yet to be released. As we find more information, it'll be released here :)

And like any good non-profit, there is tons of swag for sale here that goes directly back to supporting the cause.
